Method
Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spatula, and cook until browned, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary, then season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
- While the beef is cooking, wash and thinly slice the potatoes.
Assembly
- In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes at the bottom.
- Follow with half of the cooked beef mixture and 1 cup of shredded cheese. Repeat the layers, finishing with a layer of potatoes on top.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the heavy cream and beef broth. Pour this mixture evenly over the layered potatoes and beef.
Baking
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 60 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes to allow the cheese to melt and the top to brown beautifully.
- Once cooked, let the casserole sit for about 10 minutes before serving.
- Garnish with fresh parsley to elevate the dish’s appearance.
Notes
For an extra kick, consider adding sautéed bell peppers or spices during the beef cooking stage.
