Ingredients

For the Casserole
  • 1 pound ground beef Can substitute with ground turkey for a lighter option.
  • 4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced Yukon Gold or Russet work best.
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese Feel free to experiment with a blend of cheeses.
  • 1 cup heavy cream Can substitute with half-and-half for a lighter version.
  • 1 cup beef broth Homemade or store-bought.
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • Fresh parsley for garnish Optional.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spatula, and cook until browned, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary, then season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  4. While the beef is cooking, wash and thinly slice the potatoes.
Assembly
  1. In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes at the bottom.
  2. Follow with half of the cooked beef mixture and 1 cup of shredded cheese. Repeat the layers, finishing with a layer of potatoes on top.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the heavy cream and beef broth. Pour this mixture evenly over the layered potatoes and beef.
Baking
  1. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 60 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes to allow the cheese to melt and the top to brown beautifully.
  3. Once cooked, let the casserole sit for about 10 minutes before serving.
  4. Garnish with fresh parsley to elevate the dish’s appearance.

Notes

For an extra kick, consider adding sautéed bell peppers or spices during the beef cooking stage.
